underground hip hop
Non-mainstream rap music
Underground hip hop is rap music produced outside the mainstream music industry, typically characterized by independent labels, limited commercial distribution, and lyrics prioritizing artistic expression over radio appeal.
The underground emphasizes lyrical complexity, social commentary, and authenticity over catchy hooks and mass-market production: I only listen to underground hip hop—none of that commercial stuff.
The boundary between underground and mainstream shifts constantly as artists cross over.
