unarming

Taking away armaments

Unarming is the act of removing weapons or defenses, or the process of becoming disarmed.

The word appears both literally—the unarming of rebel forces—and figuratively, describing something that dissolves hostility or resistance: Her unarming honesty caught him off guard.

In this figurative sense, unarming overlaps with disarming, though disarming is far more common.
