fighting cocks
Roosters bred combative
Fighting cocks are roosters bred and trained for cockfighting—a blood sport in which two birds fight, often to the death, while spectators bet on the outcome.
The practice is illegal in most Western countries but persists in parts of Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
The phrase appears in similes for aggressive readiness: They went at each other like fighting cocks.
