tropical depressions
Pre-storm weather systems
Tropical depressions are weak tropical cyclones—organized storm systems with sustained winds below 39 miles per hour.
They form over warm ocean waters and may strengthen into tropical storms or hurricanes.
Meteorologists number them sequentially each season: Tropical Depression Four formed in the Gulf yesterday.
The term also appears humorously for low moods in warm climates.
