Tripped out describes a state of altered consciousness or perception, originally from the effects of psychedelic drugs but now used more broadly.
Someone who is tripped out may be experiencing visual distortions, unusual thoughts, or a general sense of unreality.
The phrase extends to describe anything bizarre, surreal, or mind-bending: That movie was totally tripped out.
It can also mean simply overwhelmed or freaked out by an unexpected situation.
