trefah

Not kosher food

Trefah is the Yiddish term for food that is not kosher—forbidden under Jewish dietary law.

Pork and shellfish are trefah, as is meat not slaughtered according to ritual requirements.

The word extends figuratively to anything impure, unfit, or religiously improper: That whole operation seemed trefah to me.

Also spelled treif or treyf.
