traffic islands
Mid-road safety zones
Traffic islands are raised or marked areas in roads that separate lanes of traffic, guide vehicles, or provide refuge for pedestrians crossing in stages.
They appear at intersections, in the middle of wide streets, and at crosswalks: We waited on the traffic island for the light to change.
Also called pedestrian islands or refuge islands.
