trade quotas

Commerce volume caps

Trade quotas are government-imposed limits on the quantity of goods that can be imported or exported during a specific period.

Unlike tariffs, which tax imports, quotas cap volume directly: The country set trade quotas on steel imports.

Quotas protect domestic industries from foreign competition but can raise prices for consumers and invite retaliation from trading partners.
