toughened glass
Heat-strengthened pane
Toughened glass is glass that has been heat-treated to increase its strength and change how it breaks.
The process heats glass to high temperatures, then rapidly cools it, creating internal tension that makes it several times stronger than ordinary glass.
When it does break, it shatters into small, relatively harmless granules rather than sharp shards.
Used in car windows, shower doors, and smartphone screens.
Also called tempered glass.
