tortured souls
The eternally suffering
Tortured souls are people who suffer intense inner anguish—from guilt, trauma, loss, or existential despair.
The phrase often describes artists or thinkers whose torment fuels their work: Van Gogh was one of history's great tortured souls.
It can also be used more loosely for anyone who seems perpetually troubled or dramatically unhappy, sometimes with gentle mockery: Don't be such a tortured soul about it.
