top-dress
Spread soil amendments
To top-dress is to apply fertilizer, compost, or other material to the surface of soil or lawn without working it in: I top-dress the garden beds with compost every spring.
The practice adds nutrients gradually as the material breaks down.
Top-dressing is the noun form for both the act and the material applied.
