timing chains
Camshaft drive links
A timing chain is a metal chain connecting an engine's crankshaft to its camshaft, ensuring the valves open and close in sync with piston movement.
Unlike timing belts, which are rubber and require periodic replacement, timing chains are more durable but noisier.
A worn or stretched timing chain can cause engine misfires or failure: The mechanic said my timing chain needs replacing.
