time-barred

Past the deadline

Time-barred describes a legal claim or action that can no longer be pursued because the statute of limitations has expired.

Once a debt or lawsuit becomes time-barred, courts will not enforce it: The creditor can't sue—the debt is time-barred.

Collectors may still attempt to collect time-barred debts, but debtors have no legal obligation to pay.
