thimerosal

Mercury-based vaccine additive

Thimerosal is a mercury-containing compound used as a preservative in vaccines and other medical products to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination.

Despite extensive research showing no link to autism or other harm at the doses used, it became controversial in the late 1990s and was removed from most childhood vaccines as a precaution.

Also spelled thiomersal.
