corrosive sublimate

Toxic mercury compound

Corrosive sublimate is an old name for mercuric chloride, a highly toxic compound once used as a disinfectant and preservative.

The term reflects its preparation through sublimation and its violently caustic properties.

It appeared in older medical and chemical texts but has largely given way to modern nomenclature: The apothecary kept corrosive sublimate under lock and key.
