terraced garden
Hillside growing levels
A terraced garden is built on a slope in a series of level platforms, each retained by a wall or embankment, creating a staircase effect.
The design prevents erosion and allows cultivation on hillsides: The terraced gardens of the Italian villa cascaded down to the lake.
Ancient examples like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Incan agricultural terraces demonstrate the technique's long history.
