temperance movements
Anti-alcohol social crusades
Temperance movements are organized campaigns to reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption.
Beginning in the 19th century, these movements blamed drinking for poverty, domestic violence, and social disorder.
Some advocated moderation; others demanded total abstinence.
The American temperance movement achieved its ultimate goal with Prohibition (1920–1933), which banned alcohol sales nationwide.
The temperance movement drew much of its energy from Protestant churches.
