temp folder

A temp folder (also temp directory or temporary folder) is a location on a computer where programs store files they need only briefly—during installation, while processing data, or between sessions.

These files are meant to be disposable: I cleared out my temp folder and freed up three gigabytes.

Operating systems and applications create temp folders automatically, though accumulated junk often lingers there indefinitely.
