An archive folder is a storage location for items you want to keep but don't need immediate access to.
In email applications, the archive folder holds messages removed from the inbox but not deleted: I moved all the project correspondence to my archive folder.
The term applies similarly to file management systems where older documents are stored for reference rather than active use.
