swedes
Turnip-like winter roots
Swedes are large, round root vegetables with yellowish flesh and purple-tinged skin, also called rutabagas in North America.
They're a cross between cabbage and turnip, commonly mashed or added to stews: We roasted swedes with carrots and parsnips.
The flavor is mildly sweet and earthy. (Capitalized Swedes are people from Sweden.)
