supping

Taking evening meal

Supping is the act of eating supper or, more archaically, sipping or taking liquid in small amounts.

The supper sense dominates modern usage: We spent the evening supping with friends.

The sipping sense survives mainly in the proverb He who sups with the devil should have a long spoon.
