suicide door

Backward-opening car door

A suicide door is a car door hinged at the rear edge rather than the front, opening toward the back of the vehicle.

The name comes from the danger: if the door opens while moving, wind catches it and flings it wide, potentially pulling occupants out.

Common on cars through the 1930s, they fell from favor for safety reasons but appear on some modern luxury vehicles as a styling choice.
