subject-verb-object

Basic clause structure

Subject-verb-object describes the standard word order in English sentences, where the doer comes first, then the action, then the receiver: The dog bit the man.

Linguists abbreviate it SVO.

Languages vary—some put the verb last, others put the object first—but English consistently follows this pattern in declarative sentences.
