student deferment
College enrollment exemption
Student deferment is the postponement of military service granted to someone enrolled in school.
The term is most associated with the Vietnam War era, when college enrollment allowed young men to delay or avoid the draft: He kept his student deferment by staying in graduate school.
Critics argued the policy favored the privileged, since working-class men were less likely to attend college.
