stopping over

Making temporary halt

Stopping over is making a brief stay somewhere during a longer journey.

The term appears most often in travel contexts, where a stopover breaks up a trip: We're stopping over in Tokyo for two nights on our way to Bangkok.

The stay is temporary by definition—you're passing through, not arriving.
