stay of proceedings
Court-ordered suspension
A stay of proceedings is a court order that halts legal action, temporarily or permanently.
It suspends a case without dismissing it: The judge granted a stay of proceedings pending the appeal.
Stays may be issued to prevent abuse of process, await related rulings, or allow time for settlement negotiations.
The case remains on the docket but cannot move forward until the stay is lifted.
