standby tickets
Unclaimed seat purchases
Standby tickets are purchased without a guaranteed seat—you wait and hope space becomes available.
Airlines sell them at a discount to passengers willing to risk not boarding if the flight is full.
Theaters sometimes offer standby tickets for sold-out shows, released just before curtain: We got standby tickets to Hamilton.
