Automated surveillance program
Spybot is software designed to detect and remove spyware—malicious programs that secretly monitor user activity or steal personal data.
The term gained currency in the early 2000s as spyware became a widespread problem: I ran Spybot to clean up my computer.
It can also refer to automated bots that gather intelligence or surveil online activity.
