keylogging

Recording typed characters

Keylogging is the practice of recording keystrokes on a computer or device, typically without the user's knowledge.

Keyloggers—software or hardware that performs this surveillance—capture passwords, messages, and other typed information.

Employers sometimes use keylogging to monitor workers, but it's more associated with hackers and spyware: The malware included a keylogger that sent her passwords to the attackers.
