browser hijacker
Search engine intruder
A browser hijacker is malicious software that takes control of a web browser without the user's consent, typically changing the homepage, default search engine, or redirecting searches to unwanted sites.
Browser hijackers often install themselves bundled with free software and can be difficult to remove: I spent an hour trying to get rid of that browser hijacker.
The goal is usually to generate advertising revenue or collect user data.
