spike fiddle

Vertical neck instrument

A spike fiddle is a class of stringed instrument where the neck passes through the body and protrudes at the bottom as a spike, which rests on the ground or the player's leg during performance.

Examples include the Chinese erhu, the Persian kamancheh, and the rebab.

The design predates European fiddles and remains common across Asia and the Middle East.
