soupline

Waiting for food

A soupline is a queue of people waiting for free food, typically soup or other simple meals distributed by charitable organizations during times of hardship.

The term evokes Depression-era imagery of the unemployed and destitute lining up at soup kitchens: Thousands joined the souplines when the factories closed.

Also spelled as two words: soup line.
