sos

Urgent plea letters

SOS is a distress signal, originally used in Morse code because its pattern (three dots, three dashes, three dots) was easy to transmit and recognize.

It now serves as a general call for urgent help: She sent out an SOS when the project collapsed.

The letters don't stand for anything—"save our ship" and "save our souls" are folk etymologies.
