soft shell clam
Thin-shelled coastal bivalve
A soft shell clam is an edible bivalve mollusk with a thin, brittle shell that doesn't fully close, native to the Atlantic coast of North America.
Also called a steamer clam because of how they're typically prepared: We ordered a bucket of steamers.
The shells crack easily compared to hard-shell varieties like quahogs.
