snipe hunting
Prank on newcomers
Snipe hunting is a practical joke in which newcomers are sent to hunt for a nonexistent or nearly impossible quarry, typically involving an elaborate setup and abandonment in the woods at night.
A fixture of summer camps and fraternity initiations: They left him in the forest with a bag, waiting for snipes that would never come.
The term extends to any fool's errand.
