snapshotting

Taking quick captures

Snapshotting is the act of capturing a snapshot—a record of a system's state at a particular moment.

In computing, snapshotting preserves the exact condition of a virtual machine, database, or file system so it can be restored later: We do snapshotting every hour in case something breaks.

The term extends to any process of freezing a moment for later reference.
