skyquakes

Mysterious aerial thunder

Skyquakes are unexplained booming sounds that seem to come from the sky, reported throughout history in various coastal and lakeside regions.

The sounds resemble distant thunder or cannon fire but occur without storms, aircraft, or other obvious sources.

Different locations have local names for the phenomenon: Seneca guns in New York, Barisal guns in Bangladesh, mistpouffers along the North Sea.

Proposed explanations include distant thunder, meteor explosions, underwater gas releases, and military activity, though many occurrences remain mysterious.
