Rally ends, switch
Side out is a volleyball term for when the receiving team wins the rally and gains the serve.
Under older scoring rules, points could only be scored by the serving team, so a side out meant winning back the serve without the opponent scoring.
The term persists even under rally scoring, where every rally awards a point: We need a side out here.
