side-slipping

Drifting off course

Side-slipping is moving or sliding sideways, especially in aviation where a pilot deliberately banks the aircraft while applying opposite rudder to lose altitude quickly without gaining airspeed: The pilot used side-slipping to drop below the clouds.

Vehicles can also side-slip when tires lose traction and slide laterally.
