shunters
Rail car movers
Shunters are railway workers who move locomotives and carriages around yards and stations, coupling and uncoupling cars to assemble trains.
The term comes from shunt, meaning to push aside or divert onto a different track.
In British usage especially, shunters handle the slow, precise work of repositioning rolling stock: The shunters worked through the night assembling the freight train.
