semordnilap

Backward-spelling wordplay

A semordnilap is a word that spells a different word when reversed: "stressed" becomes "desserts," "diaper" becomes "repaid." The term itself is "palindromes" spelled backward—a self-descriptive joke.

Unlike palindromes, which read the same in both directions, semordnilaps produce distinct words: I noticed that "lived" is "devil" backward.
