seized engine
Immobile power plant
A seized engine is one whose internal components have locked up and can no longer move, typically because of catastrophic lubrication failure.
When oil runs out or breaks down, metal parts grind against each other, overheat, and fuse together—pistons weld to cylinder walls, bearings disintegrate.
A seized engine usually cannot be repaired economically: The mechanic said the engine had seized and we'd need a new one.
