seatbelt check
Buckle verification routine
A seatbelt check is the moment—often performed with mock seriousness—when a driver suddenly brakes or swerves and reaches an arm across a passenger, as if to verify the restraint is fastened.
The gesture is protective but also performative, sometimes flirtatious: He did the seatbelt check when we hit the red light.
