seaminess

Quality of squalor

Seaminess is the quality of being sordid, squalid, or morally degraded.

The word derives from seamy, which originally described the rough underside of a garment where seams are visible—the hidden, unfinished part not meant for display.

By extension, seaminess suggests the unsavory aspects lurking beneath a respectable surface: the seaminess of the sex trade, the seaminess of backroom politics.
