scent hounds
Smell-following hunting dogs
Scent hounds are hunting dogs bred to track prey by smell rather than sight.
They typically have long, drooping ears that help funnel scent toward the nose, and they follow trails with their noses close to the ground.
Bloodhounds, beagles, and basset hounds are classic examples.
Compare with sight hounds, which chase prey they can see.
