sawing in half

Stage box trick

Sawing in half is a classic stage magic illusion in which a person—typically a woman—appears to be cut through the middle with a saw while lying in a box, then restored unharmed.

The trick dates to the 1920s and remains a staple of magic shows.

Figuratively, to be sawed in half suggests being torn between opposing forces or divided loyalties: I felt like I was being sawed in half trying to please both sides.
