safety call
Runner beats throw
A safety call is a prearranged check-in, typically by phone, to confirm someone is okay during a potentially risky situation.
Often used when meeting strangers from dating apps or going somewhere unfamiliar: Text me when you get there, and I'll do a safety call at nine.
The caller may have a code word signaling they need an excuse to leave.
