Prevents congenital infection
A rubella vaccine is a preparation that stimulates immunity against rubella, a viral infection also called German measles.
Rubella is usually mild but causes severe birth defects when contracted during pregnancy.
The vaccine is typically administered as part of the MMR shot, which also protects against measles and mumps: All children should receive the rubella vaccine before starting school.
