rough air

Choppy atmospheric conditions

Rough air is turbulent atmospheric conditions that cause an aircraft to shake, bounce, or drop unexpectedly.

Pilots and flight attendants warn passengers to fasten seatbelts when encountering rough air.

The term is slightly more technical than "turbulence" but means the same thing: We hit some rough air over the mountains.
