ronins

Wandering Japanese swordsmen

Ronins is the plural of ronin, a Japanese word for a samurai without a master.

Historically, a ronin had lost his lord through death or disgrace and wandered without allegiance.

The term now applies figuratively to anyone operating independently outside traditional structures—a freelancer, a student between schools, or someone who's left an organization: After quitting the firm, he spent two years as a ronin consultant.
